In 1968, Rotterdam cabaret artist Dorus (Tom Manders) praised the Lijnbaan in a song set to Tom Jones' "Delilah," celebrating its vibrant atmosphere. Opened on 9 October 1953, Lijnbaan was the first shopping street in the Netherlands with shops on the pavement, marking a revolution in post-war urban design and becoming a beloved symbol of Rotterdam's revival. Despite its initial popularity, Lijnbaan faced challenges, including competition from similar streets and the loss of respected traders, leading to its decline in vitality. Today, changing shopping habits and sustainability demands have further diminished its vibrancy, especially at night, turning it into a "dead street." To revive Lijnbaan, this study proposes three objectives: activating nightlife, enhancing ecological contributions, and enriching its programs, aiming to restore its liveliness both day and night.
